Forage out the truth

A crowded dial vs. A reason to stay. Radio Nova launched into one of the most competitive radio markets in the country, against Dublin stations carrying decades of listener habit such as 98FM, FM104 and the national networks. Every one of them had established presenters, strong promotions, and a share of the same chart playlist.

What we uncovered: Nova’s difference was defined as much by what it wouldn’t play as by what it would. Rock music you couldn’t hear anywhere else on the Dublin dial, and none of the pop hits its rivals were built on. In a market where everyone was competing over the same songs, that discipline gave the station a format nobody else was serving.

Why it mattered: Radio is the lowest-friction category there is. Alistener can leave you in half a second, for free. Everything a station does well works harder when it hangs off a position the audience already understands. Get the music right first, and every presenter, promotion and campaign after it compounds the same idea instead of competing with it.

Strategy that drives differentiation

Focus on the music. The strategy was that simple, and holding to it was the hard part. The brand was built on a single positioning line — “Seriously Addictive Music” — that stated the category (music, not chat), the standard (seriously), and the promise (you won’t be able to stop listening) in three words.

From day one Radio Nova built its own brand rather than borrowing the conventions of the stations around it. Fourteen years later, that position has not moved. Every campaign since has been an expression of the same idea rather than a replacement for it which is precisely why the work has always been attributed to Nova and never to the market leader it was chasing.

Creativity that cuts through

Fourteen years. One idea. The launch campaign drew on rock’s own visual language and communicated what type of music it played. Another well-known campaign built on positioning of addictive music. While our more cinema TV work built the breakfast show —-Morning Glory with PJ Gallagher and Jim McCabe – into personalities the audience came for. Different eras, different media, different jobs to do, all of them making the same argument.

The work shown here is a sample from across that period. As a full-service creative agency, we’ve covered brand identity, outdoor, cinema and digital for Radio Nova and in fourteen years the brief has never needed rewriting.

Results that deliver lasting value

Market leadership. Per the most recent JNLR/Ipsos MRBI figures (2026.2):

  • #1 Music station in the Dublin commuter belt: By market share, ahead of the established players Nova launched against.
  • 8.3% Market share: In one of Ireland’s most contested radio markets.
  • Highest ever listenership: Record weekly and daily tune-in – fourteen years after launch, still growing.

The partnership

We have been with Radio Nova since the start. The station has never changed its position, and the brand has never had to be rebuilt only extended. At Bloom, we find the truth a competitor can’t borrow, and then hold our nerve on it for as long as it takes. In Nova’s case, fourteen years and counting.
